So I realized something as I was waking up from being passed out on the couch--advertising for the majority of products out there just sucks. I mean, you've got two extremes for ads. You've got the ones that got made on a budget of five dollars and just suck for lack of effort, and the ones that try to be so clever they end up circling around the whole spectrum to awesome, coming back around and sucking anyway because you have no idea what it was for.
Like this one ad that I just saw on TV. I don't remember the product or service or even the genre of it, and I watched it ten minutes ago. The one thing I can remember is that there was this repeating shot of a lady walking up a staircase saying something after the voiceover, and by the end of the commercial she'd walked up the same steps five times, saying something different each time.
Or you get the ads that spend so much time being clever that they completely forget to mention the product save for a logo at the end. Car commercials seem to do this every time a blockbuster movie comes out. I swear, they forget what the kerr they're trying to sell. You get this long, extended Iron Man 2 trailer, and then at the end they go, "Oh yeah, buy an Audi."
But coming back around to five-dollar sucktastic, ever seen an ad for Outrageous Audio? It's a car audio shop up here in Portland, so if you live anywhere else, you haven't. But their ads consist of a logo, and then 30 seconds to a minute of this really annoying guy yelling at the camera that he's got 'Sony iPod Decks for only 59 bucks! Until they're gone!!' and acting surprised that they're offering a deal that amazing. Acting poorly, I should say, because his 'surprised' face reads like a guy who just received an unexpected colonoscopy.
